  1.  Library mission statement:

The mission of the FSSD library is to create an environment where students and staff can be capable users of ideas and information; where critical thinking, thoughtful research, ethical use of knowledge and a love for reading are fostered (Outline of Guidelines, AASL, 2017).

  1.  5 Year Plan:
  • Goal 1: Assist students and staff so that they may become capable users of ideas and information:
    • Objective 1: Teach students the skills they need to become critical thinkers:
      • Measurement: Students will be given raw data and asked to write an argument or analysis based on that data.
    • Objective 2: Teach the students how to perform thoughtful research.
      • Measurement: Students will present research with proper citations on a topic of their choice using peer-reviewed journal articles, encyclopedias, and other vetted sources at the end of the school year.
  • Goal 2:  Encourage a love of reading.
    • Objective 1: Purchase and weed books to curate an engaging and informative library collection.
      • Measurement: Library catalog statistics will show that outdated and irrelevant books are being removed and new books are being added each month of the school year.
    • Objective 2: Increase library usage through book trailers, social media engagement, and displays.
      • Measurement: Circulation statistics will increase by 10% each year.

III.   1 Year Plan

  • Goal 1: Increase reading and student engagement with the library collection.
    • Objective 1: Weed the library collection of outdated books, books in disrepair, and books that are clearly not being circulated and have no outstanding value.
      • Measurement: The library collection will be weeded by at least 5% in the first half of the school year.
    • Objective 2: New and engaging books, both fiction and non-fiction will be purchased and displayed prominently.
      • Measurement: At least five new books will be purchased each month of the school year, through a membership with a subscription service such as SLJ.
  • Goal 2: Teach students information literacy and critical thinking skills.
    • Objective 1: Teach students how to utilize databases and peer-reviewed journals to write a paper.
      • Measurement: Students will write a paper on a topic of their choosing using APA citation over a semester.
    • Objective 2: Teach students the skills necessary for critical thinking.
      • Measurement: Students will be given raw data and asked to write an argument or analysis based on that data.
